The basics

Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar in timezone UTC+4 (i.e. 2/3 hours ahead of mainland Europe). Being in the southern hemisphere, the Summer runs from November to April and winter May to October however there is not a huge difference in temperature between the seasons.
Mauritian creole is the most common language, but French and English are both commonly spoken. Traffic drives on the left and the roads are of a good standard.
The currency is the Mauritian Rupee and ATMs are readily available throughout the island and at the airport.
